I am a toothpaste snob. For reals, a legit snob. We don’t regularly use fluoridated toothpaste (for several reasons, primarily the MTHRF gene mutations, but I’ll save that for another conversation 😉 ), we avoid SLS, parabens and the like, and I want what we use to have remineralizing properties. We’ve had trouble with baby teeth- despite diligent care from the start but thanks to some genetic mineral deficiency issues- and so this has been one of our main focuses in health (since a healthy mouth contributes to the health of the rest of the body). Thankfully permanent teeth haven’t given us the same issues. I absolutely believe that teeth have the ability to heal (why wouldn’t they? Bones can heal…God made our body to be able to heal, so why do we always act like teeth are a done deal?), but that it definitely requires a lot of TLC- inside AND out- and intentional effort. We’ve had success in halting decay in some baby teeth with a couple of the kids by focusing on remineralizing, including diet, supplements, the way they brush, what they brush with, and cleaning/disinfecting the decayed spots, then packing them with pascalite clay (particularly at bedtime).
Anyway, we’ve gone through a LOT of different toothpastes over the years. Off the top of my head…Earthpaste, homemade, Spry, Jason’s, Tom’s, P3 Tooth Powder, M-Plus, Uncle Harry’s, BioRepair, Boka and Thieves (both regular and whitening).
So short of continuing to make my own, I’ve found my favorites, and this is one area where we’re keeping more than one brand. I know, if you already thought I was weird, I just got weirder.
BioRepair (Active Shield, the version with Zinc)- This one just has too many good benefits to let go of. Remineralizing properties is #1, obviously. Also the strongest of the “minty” options we’re sticking with, for those days we want that.
Boka– love this one because I can read the ingredients, it is remineralizing, and let’s face it, it’s so pretty. And unlike BioRepair (which is made in Italy), this one is made in the USA so you can actually read the ingredients if you don’t speak/read Italian. The flavor is a much milder mint, but still very refreshing. (Thanks Jessica!)
Thieves– I like the flavor and aftertaste of this one the most. Maybe because it’s different from the traditional toothpaste flavors? It doesn’t contain any of the remineralizing active ingredients that the others do, but with the added benefit of the essential oils, it’s definitely staying on my list.
Uncle Harry’s Remineralizing Powder– not a toothpaste, but we swish with it after brushing or sometimes after eating (especially for those of us nerdy people who still wear retainers, so that it’s “packing” on the teeth longer term).
